Beginner

After a spurt of inspiring knitted garments in the blogosphere, frustration at the un-portability* of a hobby like dressmaking, and a dream in which I learned to knit and all became clear, I felt that events were pointing me in a single inevitable direction and I asked for the following book for my birthday:

So far I have managed to cast on, knit half a row, go wrong, unravel everything, and cast on again. I’m finding the huge number of different methods out there for the same thing (with subtley different results) a bit disconcerting, and my tension is frequently too tight to be able to get the needle into the next stitch.

But practice makes perfect, right? And it is a thoroughly lovely book.

I once knitted a scarf, which was supposed to be 30 stitches across. By the time I had done 10 rows, somehow I had made it about 70 stitches across, without noticing!

Hope you have better luck than me!

Yay, I love that lots of sewists are learning to knit! I also think you made an excellent choice in knitting book. I used it to learn how to follow patterns as I needed the hand holding and terminology explained. I also found the trouble shooting section really helpful too, as I had no idea you could pick a stitch back up after dropping it!
Practice definitely makes perfect, so keep at it! :)
    Happy knitting!

Yeeeeah! I knew we’d get you eventually. Don’t worry about your tension to start off with, knitting is 10% technique and 90% muscle memory, so it’ll even out. Amazing!
